Not everyone would put animation and documentary modes of film together. Animated Realities aims to bring together those people who would. The event offers an opportunity to discuss and explore further the emergent field of the animated documentary, an audiovisual landscape characterised by blurred boundaries and unexplored territories.

Held on June 23rd and 24th 2011, Animated Realities comprises a two-day academic conference hosted jointly by the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College of Art, and a concurrent screening programme of new animated documentary work as part of the 65th Edinburgh International Film Festival. On screen and in discussion, the myriad potential uses of animation as a documentary tool in contemporary fine art, film and many other fields will come into sharper focus. We hope to create a truly interdisciplinary event and a new platform for ideas about an important and ever-expanding area of contemporary visual culture.
